The Original Disco Cowgirl
After a trip to Texas to visit family, I found myself drawn to the resurgence of Southwestern style in the U.S. As I scrolled past TikTok after TikTok talking about the Disco Cowgirl aesthetic—neon pink hats, disco balls, glittery ropers, and the dreaded cowprint pants—I couldn’t quite understand the appeal.
I remembered that my Houston-born mother and nonna both had closets packed full of rodeowear from the ’70s and ’80s, and the idea started falling into place. Instead of the glittery pink persona I’d come to expect, I decided to elevate the Disco Cowgirl aesthetic with era-appropriate western pieces—vintage Wranglers, Levi’s, and Mexican artisan-made jewelry and fringe—each carrying its own history.
By reinterpreting these staples through a contemporary lens, we explored how their rugged charm still resonates today—timeless symbols of sustainability, individuality, and self-expression. The result is a love letter to a bold and fearless spirit, rooted in authenticity rather than fleeting trends—an homage to the original Disco Cowgirl.
